Nishiki Market

Fresh, seasonal produce from ‘Kyoto's Kitchen'

One of the most renowned shopping streets in Kyoto, the bustling Nishiki Market is a covered arcade guaranteed to tantalise your taste buds and one of the leading shopping experiences despite many in Kyoto.
With a history stretching back more than 400 years, the market is known as ‘Kyoto's Kitchen' and is home to more than 120 fishmongers, butchers, grocers and supermarkets.

An incredible array of local, seasonal produce can be found, including stores selling regional specialities such as pickled vegetables, tofu skin and Kyoto-style sushi.
Free tasters are offered by many vendors – look for the trays of samples outside.
Although the majority of shops sell only edible products, stores dealing in kitchenware and souvenirs sit alongside those selling food.

Because of its popularity, and because the arcade is quite narrow, Nishiki Market can get very busy. Visit early in the morning to beat the crowds.
Once you’ve stocked up on delicious souvenirs, the nearby Shijo Street and Teramachi Street abounds with other shopping options.
