Ryukyu Glass Village is Okinawa’s largest glass workshop and has been creating colourful blown & cased glass products for more than 30 years.
Traditional-style Ryukyu glass features vibrant reds, greens, and yellows, and is intended to reflect the vivid colours of Okinawa's natural environment. The glassworks on the south of Okinawa Island began in 1985 by selling just to the Japanese market but now exports its products worldwide.
Items in the factory store start at just a few hundred yen, but many of the lower priced products are produced at the company's Vietnam factory. Pieces from the workshop's 'Okinawan craftsmen' series start at 4,000 yen (about 40 USD) for a sake glass and range into the tens of thousands of yen for larger, more elaborate items.
If you would like to try your hand at glass blowing, workshops are run throughout the day and allow you to produce glasses, plates, or necklaces. Places can fill up fast, so it is advisable to book ahead. The glass takes a few days to set properly, but the factory can mail you the finished product.
