Shintencho Shopping Street

Traditional Japanese shopping arcade home to 100 stores and the country’s tallest clock tower

With a history stretching back 70 years, Shintencho is one of Fukuoka’s oldest shopping arcades. Located in Tenjin, the city's main commercial district, the street is a stark contrast to the modern brand-name malls which surround it.  Hence, it is a great place for a more traditional shopping experience. The arcade is home to some 100 stores, including clothes shops, stationery and calligraphy stores, and supermarkets. Prices range from very cheap to somewhat pricey, but the lack of big brand stores and the fact that arcade is frequented by locals means the majority of stores are significantly cheaper than nearby malls. You will find a large marionette clock in the centre of the arcade, which is the tallest in Japan. The open square around the clock is often used to host public events and live music acts.
