Tenjin Chikagai (Underground Shopping Mall)

Underground shopping mall inspired by 19th century Europe

Stretching for nearly 600 meters beneath Fukuoka’s busiest shopping district, Tenjin Chikagai is an underground shopping mall like no other in Japan. Home to around 150 stores, the mall’s unique design is inspired by 19th century Europe and features stained glass windows and hand-laid stone pathways. Shopping options are more modern, however, and include men’s and women’s fashion, jewellery, watches and accessories, kimonos, and cosmetics. Around half of the mall’s stores offer tax-free shopping for tourists, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the compound. You can take your pick from 20 restaurants and cafes, which range from traditional Japanese dishes to bakeries and coffee shops. Tenjin Chikagai is connected to both of Tenjin’s subway stations and has dozens of entrances across the Tenjin area.
